How to Get a SIM Card in the Philippines — Including eSIM Options
Everything tourists, expats and first-time visitors need to know about staying connected in the Philippines — physical SIMs and eSIMs explained
Your First Decision Before You Even Board the Plane
Staying connected in the Philippines starts before you land. Thanks to eSIM technology, you can now have working mobile data on your phone the moment you step off the plane — no queuing at an airport kiosk, no fiddling with a SIM ejector tool, no hunting for a phone shop.
But there's an important difference between the eSIM options available to you, and understanding it will help you choose the right one for your needs.
Physical SIM vs eSIM — What's the Difference?
A physical SIM is the small plastic card that slots into your phone. You buy it in person, a staff member registers it with your passport, and it gives you a Philippine mobile number along with data and call capabilities.
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM that's downloaded directly onto your phone. No physical card needed. You scan a QR code, install the profile, and your phone connects to a network. Many newer smartphones — iPhone XS and later, most recent Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and other flagships — support eSIM. Some newer phones are eSIM only and have no physical SIM tray at all.
Option 1 — International Travel eSIMs (Install Before You Land)
Services like Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Klook eSIM sell data-only eSIMs for the Philippines that you can purchase and install before you leave home. The moment your plane lands and connects to a local tower, your data is live. No queuing, no registration desk, no SIM swapping.
How it works:
- Download the Airalo app (or similar) before your trip
- Search for Philippines and purchase a data package
- Scan the QR code to install the eSIM profile onto your phone
- When you land in the Philippines your phone automatically connects
- You have working mobile data immediately
Popular packages from Airalo for the Philippines:
- 1GB — 7 days — approximately $4.50 USD
- 3GB — 30 days — approximately $9.50 USD
- 10GB — 30 days — approximately $19 USD
Other providers like Holafly offer unlimited data plans for a fixed daily rate.
The Important Limitation of International Travel eSIMs
Here is the crucial thing to understand — international travel eSIMs like Airalo are data only. They do not give you a Philippine mobile phone number.
This means:
- ✅ You have mobile data — internet, maps, WhatsApp, Grab, social media
- ✅ You can make free app-to-app calls on WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger
- ❌ You do NOT have a Philippine phone number
- ❌ You cannot receive SMS verification codes sent to a local number
- ❌ Local businesses, hotels or services cannot call you on a Philippine number
- ❌ You cannot make direct calls to local Philippine numbers without an app
For many short-stay tourists this is perfectly fine — if you just need data and app calls, Airalo and similar services do the job beautifully and the convenience of having data the moment you land is genuinely excellent.
But if you need a local Philippine number — for Grab verification, for businesses to call you back, for receiving local SMS — you need a Philippine SIM from Globe, Smart or DITO.
Option 2 — Globe and Smart eSIMs (Philippine Number Included)
The good news is that both Globe and Smart now offer their own eSIMs — so you can get a proper Philippine mobile number without needing a physical SIM card at all.
This is ideal for travellers with newer phones that have no physical SIM tray, or anyone who doesn't want to swap out their existing SIM.
Globe eSIM
Globe's eSIM gives you a full Philippine mobile number with the same prepaid data packages available on physical SIMs.
How to get a Globe eSIM:
- Purchase at any official Globe Store — staff will process the registration and send you the QR code
- Available at Globe stores in airports, malls and major commercial centres
- You still need to register with your passport — the SIM Registration Act applies to eSIMs too
- Once the QR code is issued, scan it on your phone and the eSIM installs in minutes
Smart eSIM
Smart also offers eSIM with full Philippine number and access to all their prepaid promos and GigaLife data packages.
How to get a Smart eSIM:
- Available at official Smart Stores and select locations
- Passport registration required
- QR code issued on the spot — scan and install immediately
The Advantage of Globe and Smart eSIM Over International Travel eSIMs
| Airalo / International eSIM | Globe / Smart eSIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Install before landing | ✅ Yes | ❌ No — must visit store |
| Philippine phone number | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Receive local SMS | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Local calls | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Data packages | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes |
| Passport registration | ❌ Not required | ✅ Required |
| Best for | Data only, short stays | Full connectivity |
Option 3 — Physical SIM Cards (Globe, Smart or DITO)
If your phone doesn't support eSIM, or you prefer a physical card, buying a SIM in person remains quick and straightforward.
The Two Main Networks
Globe Telecom and its budget brand TM (Touch Mobile) have strong coverage in Metro Manila, tourist destinations like Boracay, Palawan, Siargao and El Nido, and most provincial cities.
Smart Communications and its budget brand TNT (Talk N Text) offer comparable nationwide coverage. Many users find Smart stronger in rural and provincial areas.
DITO Telecommunity is the newest network, launched in 2021 and still expanding. Competitive rates, particularly strong in parts of Mindanao and the Visayas.
Which to choose? For most tourists either Globe or Smart works well. If heading somewhere rural, ask locals which network has better signal in that specific area.
What You Need to Buy a Physical SIM
Under the SIM Registration Act all SIM cards in the Philippines — physical and eSIM — must be registered before use:
- Valid passport
- Passport photo page — photographed by the seller
- Selfie taken on the spot
- Local address — your hotel address is perfectly fine
Registration takes about 5 minutes. Without it your SIM will not activate.
Where to Buy a Physical SIM
At the Airport — Globe and Smart both have official booths inside arrival halls at NAIA Terminals 1, 2 and 3, Clark International Airport and Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Most convenient for first arrivals.
At Malls — Official stores inside all major SM, Ayala, Robinsons and Puregold malls. Staff complete the full registration for you.
At 7-Eleven and Convenience Stores — SIMs available but you may need to complete registration via the app yourself.
How Much Does a SIM Cost?
A basic prepaid SIM costs ₱40 to ₱100 and usually includes a small starter data allocation.
Prepaid Data Packages
Globe GoSURF:
- ₱99 — 3GB — 7 days
- ₱299 — 10GB — 30 days
- ₱599 — 25GB — 30 days
Smart GigaLife:
- ₱99 — 3GB — 7 days
- ₱299 — 10GB — 30 days
- ₱599 — 25GB + free social media data — 30 days
Important Technical Notes for Foreign Visitors
Check your phone is unlocked. A phone locked to your home carrier will not accept a Philippine SIM. Contact your carrier before travelling to unlock it if needed.
Check eSIM compatibility. Not all phones support eSIM. Generally supported by iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and most flagship phones from 2020 onwards. Check your phone's specifications if unsure.
Some newer phones are eSIM only. The iPhone 15 and 16 sold in the USA have no physical SIM tray at all. If you have one of these you must use eSIM — either an international travel eSIM like Airalo or a Globe/Smart eSIM from their store.
Nano SIM is standard for physical SIMs. Staff at official stores will cut to size if needed.
Top up easily at any 7-Eleven, Alfamart, sari-sari store or via GCash. Ask for "load" and tell them your network and amount.
What Your Philippine SIM or eSIM Can and Can't Do
Whether you have a physical SIM, a Globe/Smart eSIM or an international travel eSIM, all of them are excellent for mobile data, maps, social media, Grab and free app-to-app calls on WhatsApp, Viber and Messenger.
However none of them are cost-effective for calling real international telephone numbers — overseas landlines, mobile numbers, businesses, airlines, government offices, banks or hospitals abroad.
When you need to call a real overseas phone number — not just chat on an app with someone who has the same app — you need a service that connects to actual telephones worldwide. That's where CPI Call Shop comes in.
CPI specialises in connecting customers to real telephone numbers anywhere in the world — landlines, mobiles, businesses, government offices, airlines, hospitals — the kind of numbers you simply cannot reach on WhatsApp or Messenger. With rates from just ₱2 per minute, no expiry on your credit and instant activation, CPI is the affordable solution for every important international call you need to make from the Philippines.
